Pneumology

There is an established, longstanding cooperation between the Lung Clinic Immenhausen and the Department of Cardiology and Pneumology at the University Medical Center Göttingen (UMG). Hence Prof. Dr. Stefan Andreas as head of the Lung Clinic is leading the section of Pneumology at the UMG.

The group was first to demonstrate a pronounced sympathetic activation in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Successive projects focus on the causes of sympathetic activation and potential treatment options in clinical studies and a murine emphysema model.

Basic research is increasingly exploring the lung. Thus we are cooperating in the field of immunology (Prof. A. Flügel, Nature 2012; 488: 675), functional imaging (Prof. F. Alves, PLoS One 9: e90017) and molecular oncology (Prof. M. Dobbelstein, Dr. M. Lizé, Nature 2014; 510: 115).

Tobacco use is the major risk factor for a wide range of pulmonary diseases. Under the direction of PD Dr. T. Raupach the group implemented and evaluated a tobacco cessation program (only in German). The group runs clinical trials on smoking cessation. In cooperation with Professor Robert West, University College London, UK the perception of tobacco smoking among students, physicians and patients is evaluated in national and European cohorts.

Our large study center is participating in clinical studies on COPD, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, pulmonary hypertension and notably lung cancer. Thus the clinic is main partner of our lung cancer center.
